On Monday, it was announced that the great actor Micheal K. Williams had been found unresponsive in his Williamsburg apartment and was pronounced dead soon afterward, BET reports. He was just 54 years old. Williams was perhaps best known for his role on HBO's The Wire, as the beloved Omar Little, but anyone who has watched films over the last few decades has probably seen Williams at work—he was a prolific and incredibly talented performer.
"It is with deep sorrow that the family announces the passing of Emmy nominated actor Michael Kenneth Williams," Williams’ publicist said. "They ask for your privacy while grieving this unsurmountable loss."
HBO also released a statement, saying, "We are devastated to learn of the passing of Michael Kenneth Williams, a member of the HBO family for more than 20 years. While the world is aware of his immense talents as an artist, we knew Michael as a dear friend who was beloved by all who had the privilege to work with him. We send our deepest condolences to his family for this immeasurable loss."
As news of his death spread, other celebrities began to share their tributes to him online, including Taraji P. Henson and other actors from The Wire who had worked with him on the iconic show. The outpouring of grief shows that Williams was loved even more off-screen than on.
