People love to argue about movies and books and probably have ever since the first friar put a quill to parchment to draw some weird-looking dragon or something. With Twitter, a new type of argument has emerged and it's all about the morality of liking things. Writer and director Sam Perez seems to be someone who subscribes to the idea that liking certain movies means that you are probably a bad, or at least misguided, person and he probably expected his engagement tweet to have more positive engagement. Instead, he ignited a debate.
"Hey Film Twitter, I got a question," Perez asked on Sunday. "We all know red flag movies, Fight Club, The Joker, etc, that we can all spot on sight, but is there any green flag movies? Movies that you hear someone say that makes you instantly trust or like a person?"

You know, I understand what he means, because there are definitely people who watch Fight Club and think, "This is a good idea," but that doesn't mean it's the real message of the movie. We should be able to watch complex, nuanced tales without having someone come on screen and tell us who is good and who is bad and who we should aspire to be like. Unless we're children!
A few people took Perez's assignment seriously and shared some movies they love and love to find out other people love, like Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who digs Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.
That is a wildly popular movie, so Gordon-Levitt has a lot of people to like out there, which seems nice.
But for every sincere answer, there were about a dozen more people who took umbrage with the idea of a "red flag movie" and what that says about how we're monitoring art:
Then the fight shifted again, as people came back at the naysayers by claiming they're Fight Club lovers:
In a way, it all works out: people who believe in red flag movies are giving the red flag to people who don't. Everyone wins.
