The question of who should be the next James Bond in the long-running character-based series has been in the air for years. When Daniel Craig took over as 007, it was considered a new era of Bond films, far grittier and less campy than the Pierce Brosnan version of Bond that preceded him. Craig has indicated before that he wanted to leave the role, but he seems to keep getting sucked back into the franchise. He'll soon be starring in what is supposed to be his last Bond film, No Time to Die, which Screenrant reports will finally be released this October.
As he's been promoting the film, Craig's gotten the expected question of who he thinks the next Bond should be. It's been suggested by many that the next Bond should be played by literally anyone other than another white man—Idris Elba is a popular Internet favorite, and Bridgerton actor RegĂ©-Jean Page was perhaps considered. But could Bond be a woman??
Craig doesn't think so. At least, he doesn't think it should be, according to an interview with Radio Times. When asked if he thinks Bond should be a woman or person of color, he said no.
"The answer to that is very simple ... There should simply be better parts for women and actors of color. Why should a woman play James Bond when there should be a part just as good as James Bond, but for a woman?"
That's a bit disingenuous, in my opinion. Though it's true that there should be better roles for all sorts of people, casting an iconic figure like James Bond as a different type of person would have a very different meaning and power.
Many on Twitter seem to agree with Craig, however.
Technically speaking, No Time to Die's Lashana Lynch is the new 007, though that doesn't mean she'll be getting her own movie. Thats too bad, because she does have the charisma to carry Bond into the future.
