As people gathered around the Congo Gorilla Forest, two of the gorillas decided to get a little... randy. One began performing oral sex right next to the window. Right in front of the kids. Which, you know. Is what animals do, so whatever.
The person who took the video of the gorillas told the New York Post, "I was shocked and had no idea that was a 'natural' act."
"I was in the gorilla exhibit with my 4-year-old daughter and niece. My wife had to stay out of the exhibit with my sleeping son, so I wanted to capture a lot of video. Then this magic happened."
Parents yelled "oh my god" and "oh no, don't look" and, my personal favorite, "I don't know how we feel about that". Others just laughed.
The spokespeople for the Bronx Zoo declined to comment when asked for a statement by the NY Post. Presumedly because this is entirely natural for animals in the wild. Oral sex is actually common all over the animal kingdom; cheetahs, bats, bears, and more have been spotted engaging in the act.
Bonobos, a specific kind of ape, for example, have pretty wild sex lives: “Whereas the chimpanzee shows little variation in the sexual act, bonobos behave as if they have read the Kama Sutra — performing every position and variation one can imagine,” Steven D. Pinkerton, professor of psychiatry and behavioral medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin, wrote in “Sexual Nature/Sexual Culture.”
All this to say: it's not that unusual.
Researchers have observed gorillas enjoying sex for pleasure. Dr. Cyril Grueter of the University of Western Australia found in 2016 that some gorillas also engage in same-sex intercourse for fun.
The group was researching apes in Rwanda and found forty-five instances of female gorillas engaging in copulation. The team hypothesized that this happens if the females are rejected by males; they then seek out a different kind of sexual partner.
