Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings has been a box office success since its Labor Day weekend release, and Simu Liu is laughing at all the haters who thought the movie would flop.
The actor, who has the title role in the latest Marvel movie, took to social media to react to the strong opening performance. Variety noted it earned "$94.4 million in its first four days of release ... setting a new high watermark for the holiday weekend."
It added that "in normal times, that wouldn’t be much of a feat for an installment in the commercially beloved Marvel Cinematic Universe. But during the pandemic, it’s on track to become one of the highest-grossing movies of the year."
Simu tweeted, "Me laughing at the people who thought we’d flop," adding a theme-appropriate iStock photo.
That prompted a response from iStock, which read, "We always believed in you."
"And if being a superhero doesn’t work out," the company account added, "our door is always open."
The superhero thing does seem to be working out, though, and Liu decided to crow about it on another social media platform. Simu put up an Instagram story comprised of a collage of screenshots taken from different YouTube videos predicting Shang-Chi would be a "big flop."
The "LOL" pasted over the screenshots gives an indication of what Liu thought of those predictions.
Variety, putting the performance of Shang-Chi in greater perspective, noted, "Despite concerns the delta variant would keep audiences at home, Shang-Chi notched the second-biggest opening weekend of the pandemic, behind only Black Widow with $80 million." That includes several debuts that happened earlier this summer, when it appeared that the pandemic was nearing its end and more people were willing to venture out to movie theaters.
