Deadline has reported that erstwhile king of the jungle Brendan Fraser is set to play the antagonist in Warner Bros. and DC Films’ forthcoming Batgirl film.
Filmmakers have yet to publicly confirm the reports. The film itself does not yet have a release date, and other than the confirmed names of a few core cast members, details regarding the production are scant. Screenwriter Christina Hodson wrote the film. Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah are slated to direct it together, and Kristin Burr will produce.
According to the casting call that went out earlier this year, the villainous character will be none other than Firefly (or, possibly, a similar character inspired by him), a disgruntled former firefighter who becomes an arsonist.
Firefly’s appearances in Batgirl’s storylines have spanned TV, video games, and comic books. His debut occurred back in 1952, as part of Detective Comics #184, created by France Herron and Dick Sprang. Various incarnations of Firefly have included a flight suit with an attached flamethrower.
Batman will make an appearance in the film as well. We don't yet have much information about his character’s role in this film, or who will play him. Afro-Latinx actress Leslie Grace, however, will play Batgirl (a casting decision that was publicly confirmed earlier this year).
Grace sums up her character thusly: “Batgirl is a badass. She's definitely going to be fighting lots of people. She'll be very hands-on.”
