Last month’s teaser for Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin didn’t reveal many details about the plot, but the full trailer has now arrived. We now have some idea of what to expect when the film hits Paramount+ at the end of this month. The movie is slated for streaming release a few days before Halloween, on October 29.
The cast includes Emily Bader (Charmed), Ronald Buck III (Chicago Med), Tom Nowicki (The Dark and the Wicked), Gunner Wright (Underwater), and Kyli Zion (Gotham). This latest installment of the highly successful “found footage” horror franchise will be a reboot.
The plot revolves around a young auteur named Margot. The film begins with Margot setting out to make a documentary about a remote Amish community. Margot's trip, however, is really predicated on the desire to meet her extended family for the first time (they reside in said remote community). Margot sees it as a precious opportunity to learn more about her deceased mother. She brings a few friends along to assist with the filming.
Of course, as it turns out, the family is perhaps not Amish after all; and darker forces begin to prevail. A grandmother figure takes a potato peeler to her own hand while smiling distantly in a trance state; Margot and her friends discover a hidden church with a sigil-ish emblem painted on the floor. There’s a two-headed goat, and something that resembles a landlocked oubliette. And, of course, the franchise’s signature use of night-vision reportage sets the stage for jump scares.
Paranormal Activity: Next Of Kin was directed by Will Eubank (director, Underwater, 2020) and written by Christopher Landon (writer, Paranormal Activity 3, 4, and 5, as well as Happy Death Day 2U; director of both Happy Death Day films).
A documentary about the creation and history of the franchise, Unknown Dimension: The Story of a Paranormal Activity, will also drop from Paramount+ on October 29. The documentary will include previously unseen footage from the earlier films. It will also feature interviews with those who worked on it.
