Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is known for being so inoffensive online, it's almost ridiculous. The man's social media presence is all positivity, motivational workout content, and signal boosting his various family-friendly releases. So, it caused quite a frenzy when in 2016, The Rock posted and then deleted about an unnamed "candy ass" right around when The Fate of the Furious was wrapping production, and costars who couldn't "conduct themselves as stand up men."
It soon became evident he was referring to Vin Diesel, who he started working with for 2011’s Fast Five. Since then, it has seemed like The Rock will not be returning to the main work of the F&F series, though he has his spinoff, Hobbs and Shaw. But the story of their feud lives in infamy, and it came up in an interview earlier this month with Vanity Fair.
In the interview, The Rock said of his post, "It wasn’t my best day, sharing that. I shouldn’t have shared that. Because at the end of the day, that goes against my DNA. I don’t share things like that. And I take care of that kind of bulls—t away from the public. They don’t need to know that. That’s why I say it wasn’t my best day."
He's still clearly pissed though, adding, "It caused a firestorm. Yet interestingly enough…[it was] as if every single crew member found their way to me and either quietly thanked me or sent me a note. But, yeah, it wasn’t my best day, sharing that. I shouldn’t have shared that. Because at the end of the day, that goes against my DNA. I don’t share things like that. And I take care of that kind of bullshit away from the public. They don’t need to know that. That’s why I say it wasn’t my best day."
And he clarified he doesn't regret it: "No, I meant what I said. For sure. I mean what I say when I say it. But to express it publicly was not the right thing to do."
He also explained that he and Vin Diesel tried to work it out, but couldn't.
"Well, there was a meeting," he said. "I wouldn’t call it a peaceful meeting. I would call it a meeting of clarity. He and I had a good chat in my trailer, and it was out of that chat that it really became just crystal clear that we are two separate ends of the spectrum. And agreed to leave it there."
One person on the sidelines who has seen it all is Ludacris, who plays Tej the space-traveling mechanic. In an interview with US Weekly, Ludacris weighed in very diplomatically on the feud.
"All I can say is that, from what I understand, I know those are two grown men," said Luda. "I believe The Rock has spoken on that, and I don't want to speak for either one of them. So, I would leave it to whatever their words are and keep it that way, because it's a delicate situation."
Fair enough!
As for Vin, he told Men’s Health that the feud began with the difficulty of The Rock's character in the film series.
"It was a tough character to embody, the Hobbs character," said Vin Diesel. "My approach at the time was a lot of tough love to assist in getting that performance where it needed to be. As a producer to say, Okay, we’re going to take Dwayne Johnson, who’s associated with wrestling, and we’re going to force this cinematic world, audience members, to regard his character as someone that they don’t know—Hobbs hits you like a ton of bricks. That’s something that I’m proud of, that aesthetic. That took a lot of work. We had to get there and sometimes, at that time, I could give a lot of tough love. Not Felliniesque, but I would do anything I’d have to do in order to get performances in anything I’m producing."
I guess no one tells The Rock what to do on set except The Rock.
