It was only in 2020 that Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith sat at her infamous red table to talk about their relationship and the allegations from singer August Alsina that he had received Will's permission to engage in an affair with Jada. While she admitted to the affair, the language the couple used about the situation was kind of confusing. Clearly, they'd been having marriage issues, but what Will has now admitted in an interview with GQ is that they also have an open marriage.
Will admits that both of them have had relationships outside of their marriage with one another's full permission and support. They've also had a lot of fighting and disharmony, but it doesn't seem necessarily related to the outside relationships, though Will said he struggled with it because he has a Christian upbringing that made him feel somewhat ashamed of his "sinful thoughts."
He also said that the reality of dating lots of people at once is very different from the fantasy.
"I don’t know where I saw it or some sh-t as a teenager, but the idea of traveling with 20 women that I loved and took care of and all of that, it seemed like a really great idea," Will explained. "And then, after we played it out a little bit, I was like, 'That would be horrific. That would be horrific.'"
Amongst Will's past paramours are Misty Copeland and Halle Berry. He says Jada grew up in a less conventional household and her adjustment to being open was less difficult than it was for him.
"There were significant endless discussions about, what is relational perfection?" he said. "What is the perfect way to interact as a couple? And for the large part of our relationship, monogamy was what we chose, not thinking of monogamy as the only relational perfection.
"We have given each other trust and freedom, with the belief that everybody has to find their own way. And marriage for us can’t be a prison. And I don’t suggest our road for anybody... But the experiences that the freedoms that we’ve given one another and the unconditional support, to me, is the highest definition of love."
As for the relationship Jada had with August Alsina, it supposedly took place while the couple was separated and afterwards they reconciled, ending her entanglement. But apparently not ending the openness of their marriage!
It's probably hard to be a celebrity in a monogamous relationship. It's hard enough when you're not famous, and you're not constantly surrounded by hot rich famous people. Good for the Smiths for working it all out.
