olive durant blind, blind woman can see, blind woman can now see

A woman named Olivia Durant went viral on TikTok after she started sharing posts about how at age 36, through a series of surgeries, she was able to see. Durant grew up legally blind, saying she was born with eyes "shaped like a football," which made her ability to see very limited.

She could see some shape and color, but it was almost like looking through a microscope, BuzzFeed reports. Her surgeries began in 2016 and involved injecting new lenses into each eye and two laser surgeries.

People have a lot of questions about what it's like to be legally blind and also what's changed about her perception of the world with this new sense. In one post, Durant answers a question about what the most "shocking" thing she saw was. Her answer was "herself."

Durant didn't recognize her own reflection and even greeted it, thinking it was another person:

By 2020, Durant felt adjusted enough to start exploring, but lockdown changed her plans. So she started posting on TikTok. She now has about 20-25 vision and wears glasses to focus on objects close and far away. While insurance covered some of her procedures, she still ended up paying about $10k.

One of the things that comes up a lot on TikTok is how people who have vision understand blindness.

"People really don't understand what being blind actually is," she told BuzzFeed. "You can be blind for any number of reasons — injury, genetics, disease, etc. — so of course, a person's own experience being blind will be different than someone else's."

It's rare for someone to have such a unique experience and Durant is extremely open to people's curiosity:

It's especially interesting to hear Durant talk about things like body language, a communication form that people with sight probably take for granted. She says she appreciates when people are patient with her and she gets better at this stuff every day.
