best movie twists, movie twists, movies with twists

When it comes to movies, it’s often hit or miss. Sometimes audiences walk into the theater and they are able to guess every plot point within minutes of sitting down. Then there are those amazing movies—you know the ones—movies that captivate viewers from the very beginning and leave them totally blown away by the end. These movies usually have great character development, talented actors, and mind-blowing twists and turns.

In a recent Reddit thread, users are chiming in to share the best movie twists they’ve seen, and the answers deserve a spot on your to-watch list.

Movies like Parasite, Gone Girl, and Cabin in the Woods all made the list, and for good reason.

Now, without further ado, here are 20 movies with twists that no one saw coming.

1. Moon

Sam Rockwell is amazing in everything but this one blew me away.

2. Oldboy

And to clarify for those who haven’t watched it… the Korean version… the US version was botched.

3. Psycho

It starts out being about a woman on the run with a suitcase full of money and then turns into a completely different movie a third of the way in.

4. Orphan

I didn’t see that twist coming at all.

5. Crazy, Stupid, Love

[It] has not one but two of the best twists ever for a rom-com! I had randomly put it on one night thinking it would be a generic run of the mill comedy but the setups are so good that those twists come out of nowhere but are still fantastic.

6. Twelve Monkeys

Simply fantastic.

BobVosh

7. The Sixth Sense

Everyone in the theatre let out a collective jaw-dropping "oooooooh sh-t."

MickeyWallace

8. The Mist

The ending was terrible but in a good way like the twist was heartbreaking but it was so good.

9. Memento

Such a brilliant movie. I think the fact that it’s presented backwards sometimes overshadowed his good the plot twist actually is.

10. The Others

I'm mentioning this movie not because it is the best but rather because it is hard to find digitally for some reason but the movie "The Others" with Nicole Kidman has a great twist for its time.

11. 10 Cloverfield Lane

I love this movie and it's sometimes a hard watch for me because John Goodman behaves exactly like my father, and his performance is both terrifying and incredible, but the whole film is phenomenal and the ending was like, omg wtf----ck.

Rona_Lightfoot

12. Monty Python and the Holy Grail

Nobody expected it to end like that in all honesty.

13. Arrival

I loved the twist in Arrival! Watching it start to all come together was awesome.

14. Planet of the Apes

I watched it on TV in college one lazy Sunday afternoon. I knew about the twist from pop culture, but I discovered my roommate didn’t know anything about it so watching him see the twist was a really fun experience.

15. Shutter Island

The first time I watched Shutter Island I was so floored.

16. Parasite

The scene where that maid tried to get into that secret basement just turned the movie upside down. That was so unexpected!

17. The Usual Suspects

I saw the Usual Suspects in the theater when it first was released. We had been swimming at the river all day in the hot sun and drinking beers, but my friends wanted to go to the movie so I tagged along.

95% through the movie, the sun, and beers caught up to me and my eyes started to droop. There was a lot of quiet talking going on in the movie and I just zonked out.

Wake up to the credits rolling and my friends are sitting there with their jaws on the ground saying "holy f--k! amazing! holy sh-t!" and I'm just blinking, groggy, and confused asking, "what happened?!"

They couldn't even explain it and that's how I missed the greatest twist in a movie ever.

18. Cabin in the Woods

I'm so glad I went in blind seeing it in theaters. Partner and I ended up inviting all of our friends and going back to the theater the next night.

AngeeKeekee

19. The Skeleton Key

So, Skeleton Key is one of my all time favorite movies. Went into it not really knowing too much about the premise other than what you learn in the first 15 mins and was RIVETED!

20. Gone Girl

The screenplay is brilliant and the editing dragged on the main portion of the movie perfectly to where you feel like the movie is over.
