The Internet is in an uproar about actor Brian Cox trashing the performance of Johnny Depp in the film Edward Scissorhands in his new memoir, and it's a pretty funny moment in angry Twitter history, in my opinion. Cox's memoir is titled Putting the Rabbit in the Hat and based on the quotes taken from the book and published by the Big Issue on Thursday, he doesn't care what anyone thinks.

Cox drags actors, directors, and even David Bowie. The man is 75, and he's all out of f-cks! Though Cox did tell the outlet, "I’m expecting probably never to hear from some people again. But that’s the way it goes."

Of filmmaker Tarantino, Cox writes, "I find his work meretricious. It’s all surface. Plot mechanics in place of depth. Style where there should be substance. I walked out of Pulp Fiction … That said, if the phone rang, I’d do it."

Of Steven Segal, with whom he co-starred in the 1996 film The Glimmer Man, Cox said, "Steven Seagal is as ludicrous in real life as he appears on screen. He radiates a studied serenity, as though he’s on a higher plane to the rest of us, and while he’s certainly on a different plane, no doubt about that, it’s probably not a higher one."

Before he became a famous musician, Bowie was in the movie Redcap alongside Cox, who said, "A skinny kid, and not a particularly good actor. He made a better pop star, that much is for certain."

But the big-ticket item really enraging fans is what he had to say about Depp. Cox apparently refused a role in the Pirates of the Caribbean series as Governor Weatherby Swann that eventually went to Jonathan Pryce. This gave him a moment to talk about Depp, writing, "Personable though I’m sure he is, is so overblown, so overrated. I mean, Edward Scissorhands. Let’s face it, if you come on with hands like that and pale, scarred-face makeup, you don’t have to do anything. And he didn’t. And subsequently, he’s done even less."

Okay, I personally find this to be a hilarious burn, but some are less amused and wonder how Cox would dare besmirch someone so much more famous than him—because we all know fame and talent are inextricably linked.

Cox is currently starring in one of the biggest shows on Netflix, Succession, so he's not exactly an unknown. He's just not in the category of fame that someone like Johnny Depp is. Few are, to be fair. Something about Cox's tone in these excerpts makes me think he doesn't spend a ton of time on Twitter, but I doubt he'd be too phased by the criticism.

Before we exit, let's share his thoughts on Michael Caine, who he only mildly scorches.

"I wouldn’t describe Michael as my favorite, but he’s Michael Caine. An institution. And being an institution will always beat having range." So true.
