Letitia Wright was initially praised for her breakout turn as Shuri in Black Panther —many wanted her to take over for T'Challa in the title role—but she's since seen a dramatic about-face in public sentiment.

She is getting more screen time in Wakanda Forever, the sequel to the first Panther movie, but she has engaged in some controversial behaviors by promoting ENTIRELY DEBUNKED anti-vaccine views. Some fans think that's enough to get her recast.

We don't know much about the sequel's production but some news from behind the scenes trickled out and it's ... not good. Wright was injured on August 25th and went home to recover. Filming continued without her and they handled scenes that didn't require her to be there, but set will shut down next week until she is able to return.

The Hollywood Reporter wrote that the vaccination status of Wright may be a serious problem.

Her injury was initially reported as "non-serious" but she's been gone from set for two months. That's a long time for a mild injury. The Hollywood Reporter explains that if Wright is not vaccinated, she may be barred from the United States — foreign citizens need to provide proof of vaccination.

When this report hit social media, Panther fans erupted.

Wright's last social media post was over a month ago. She denied that she was spreading her anti-vax message at work but also didn't endorse the vaccine. People figured that was an admission that she's against the vaccine.

On November 5th, her reps said simply that she is “looking forward to returning to work early 2022." There was no further clarification of vaccine status.

Odds aren't good for Shuri to see a recast. They've been filming all summer & fall and have a release date in November 2022. But the backlash is going to cause issues for the film's publicity and the cast may have to dodge awkward questions about Wright.

Ironically, Shuri is a scientific genius positioned as a role model for girls. Wright's public image clearly runs in the face of that; she spouts dangerous conspiracy theories and rejects all science regarding the vaccine.
