The trailer for the third edition of J.K. Rowling's Fantastic Beasts series just dropped, and fans of the films and of Johnny Depp are pissed off to see actor Mads Mikkelsen step into the role of Grindelwald. Warner Bros. replaced Depp after he and his ex-wife Amber Heard began a long and contentious divorce, during which she accused him of domestic violence and released a video of him stumbling drunk around his apartment.
People are pretty unhappy with Mikkelsen, or at least disappointed:
There is a lot of contention over who did what to who in the Depp case, with Heard herself accused of being abusive to Depp. But in March of 2021, Depp was unable to overturn a libel case agains The Sun for calling him a "wife-beater," with the court deciding the accusations were "substantially true."
Depp has been replaced, and there's no going back no matter how the court cases shake out.
J.K. Rowling has voiced support for Depp, but she's not exactly an arbiter of good judgment these days. Luckily for production, figures in the story change appearance frequently, so it's not too hard to figure out a reason for the switcheroo in the Fantastic Beasts timeline. That doesn't stop the crankiness:
Mads Mikkelsen told The Times in an interview about his take over, "I didn't want to copy what Johnny had done. I think he's a masterful actor, so copying him would've been creative suicide."
For what it's worth, Mikkelsen didn't seem to think that Depp should have the role taken from him.
"But I didn’t have a dog in that fight," he said. "And I don’t know what happened [in his private life], and I don’t know if it was fair, him losing the job, but I just knew that the show was going on, and I would’ve loved to have talked to him about it if I had the chance, but I just don’t know him in that sense."
