A new Matrix Resurrections trailer landed and it shows Neo in the real world, outside of The Matrix itself.
The newest film in the franchise is set twenty years after the previous film, The Matrix Revolutions. Neo is living in The Matrix again with what seems to be a pretty normal life. He's called Thomas A. Anderson and has no memory of anything that happened in the first three films or of Trinity. Trinity also has no memory of Neo.
But when Neo reunites with Morpheus, he is offered a red pill and he slowly remembers the actual truth — time to save the world again!
Keanu Reeves joins Carrie-Anne Moss as Trinity, Jada Pinkett Smith as Niobe, Lambert Wilson as The Merovingian and Daniel Bernhardt as Agent Johnson, all of whom were in the original trilogy. We also get a whole bunch of newbies: Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Morpheus, Jessica Henwick, Jonathan Groff, Neil Patrick Harris, Piryanka Chopra Jonas and Christina Ricci.
Production was slowed by Covid-19; so much so that returning co-writer and director Lana Wachowski almost tossed the entire project. The cast was said to have banded together and convinced Wachowski to finish the film. Production wrapped in late 2020 and a December 2021 theatrical and HBOMax release date was set.
The all-new trailer for The Matrix Revolutions shows a lot of parallels between the new movie and the original trilogy.
The real-world footage is a huge change in the sequel's story—it means we're going to explore the machines that rule humanity.
The other Matrix Resurrection trailers released have shown us human harvesting pods, which were in the original trilogy. But this new footage shows us that we're not going to see Neo's original awakening, but a NEW reawakening. There is also a love story, teased by Reeves and Moss, at the center of the plot — which means it's likely Neo is going to find a way for Trinity to come back, despite her death.
The new trailer also teases a first look at Lambert Wilson's The Merovingian, previously seen in Revolutions. We only get a passing glance, but the trailer shows The Merovingian in disarray; his suit is a wreck and his hair is long and scraggly.
The wait is almost over: The Matrix Resurrections comes out on December 22.
