Part of the reality of being an actor is that you do not get MOST of the parts you want or audition for — trust me. I know.
Still, it's always a little comforting to realize that not only are YOU not booking all of those roles, but famous dude John Cena also faced that kind of rejection.
The Peacemaker star shared a whole host of superhero movie gigs he was denied before he joined the DC EU.
So many actors are now part of a major comic book franchise. Obviously we have Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans, but also Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds also came from the franchise-style films. The DCEU made stars from Gal Gadot and Jason Momoa. The list goes on and on.
Cena entered the superhero universes last year in The Suicide Squad. He played Peacemaker in the James Gunn installment. After working with Cena on the film, Gunn came up with a spinoff show for Peacemaker. The show has already seen wildly positive reviews, so it looks like Gunn was spot on and audiences are excited to see more of Cena's character.
The first three episodes of the new show are now streaming on HBO Max and Cena is in the midst of press for the series. He spoke with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused Podcast, which was where Cena revealed a few of the characters he didn't get to embody.
He confirmed that DCEU's Shazam and Cable in Deadpool 2 were on the list as well as many Marvel characters.
When actors share their missed opportunities, I know I like to picture how different the role would have been. It's no knock to the actor who landed the job, it's just an interesting thought exercise to imagine Cena playing Billy Batson or Cable instead of Zachary Levi and Josh Brolin respectively. What Cena would bring to the characters is vastly different than what Levi and Brolin brought, just by nature of their being different people with different experiences.
I think we can expect to see plenty of Peacemaker down the road though, so honestly... it's just as well!
