Local news France Bleu initially reported that an investigation showed that Ulliel had collided with another skier in an intersection of two runs at the La Rosiere ski resort. Ulliel was rushed to a hospital in Grenoble; he had suffered major head trauma and was operated on quickly. The other skier had not been sent to the hospital.

Ulliel was well known in France. He recently earned a Cesar Award — which is a French Oscar — for It's Only The End of The World, in which he played a dying gay playwright. The film also starred Marion Cotillard, Léa Seydoux, and Vincent Cassel.

Additionally, Ulliel won a Lumières Award for playing Yves Saint Laurent, the French designer, in a 2014 biopic. He has also starred in A Very Long Engagement with Audrey Tautou and appeared in Paris, je t'aims and Hannibal Rising.

The French finance minister, Bruo Le Maire, commented on the actor's death, saying that, "French cinema has lost a huge talent, full of charm and energy" on Twitter.

The French prime minister commented on Ulliel's death on Twitter. He said,  "Gaspard Ulliel grew up with cinema and cinema grew with him. They loved each other madly. It is with a heavy heart that we will no longer see his most beautiful interpretations. We have lost a French actor.”

Moon Knight is set to air on Disney+ on March 30th and stars Ulliel as well as Oscar Isaac and Ethan Hawke. Ulliel plays the art thief Anton Mogart, AKA Midnight Man.
