Paramount is planning to begin negotiations to get Star Trek stars Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, John Cho and Simon Pegg to come back for a fourth Star Trek movie.

J.J. Abrams made the announcement during the Paramount Investors' Day Presentation on February 15th.

“We are thrilled to say that we are hard at work on a new ‘Star Trek’ film that will be shooting by the end of the year that will be featuring our original cast and some new characters that I think are going to be really fun and exciting and help take ‘Star Trek’ into areas that you’ve just never seen before,” Abrams said. “We’re thrilled about this film, we have a bunch of other stories that we’re talking about that we think will be really exciting, so can’t wait for you to see what we’re cooking up. But until then, live long and prosper.”

The actors first became Kirk, Spock, Uhura, Bones, Sulu, and Scotty back in 2009's Star Trek, which Abrams directed. It reset the Trek timeline and gave the reboot an existence apart from any films that previously happened.

There were two sequels, 2013's Star Trek Into Darkness, and 2016's Star Trek Beyond, directed by Abrams and Justin Lin respectively.

Abrams is set to produce the new film through his company, Bad Robot, and Matt Shakman, who worked on WandaVision will direct the film. It was written by Josh Friedman and Cameron Squires. An earlier draft of the film was written by Lindsey Beer and Geneva Robertson-Dworet.

Back in 2018, Paramount almost brought the cast back for a sequel that would have seen Kirk reunite with his father, played by Chis Hemsworth. The film never happened, supposedly because Paramount couldn't close a deal with the two Chrises.

Since then, the studio has done a lot of market research to see if audiences were still interested in the reboot. Execs saw that there was still excitement for the rebooted cast and the studio decided to move forward with the crew.

Paramount has repeatedly tried to find new ways to keep the Star Trek franchise alive. Quentin Tarantino was said to have "cooled" on a script he was working on with The Revenant writer, Mark L. Smith. Back in 2019, Paramount asked Noah Hawley to write and direct a new Trek film, but that deal disappeared when Emma Watts became the president of Paramount Motion Picture Group. Watts left Paramount in September, which may have opened the avenues for more Trek movies.
