New footage from the Oscars has surfaced that seems to show Jada Pickett Smith's reaction to Will Smith's slap of Chris Rock on the stage.
To recap, Rock referenced Jada Pinkett Smith’s short haircut as part of a joke about the film GI Jane.
“Jada, I love you,” he said. “G.I. Jane 2, can’t wait to see it.” Rock’s reference cited the star of the film, Demi Moore, who buzzed her head for the movie.
Pinkett Smith has previously opened up about having alopecia, an autoimmune disorder that causes hair loss. She’s shared her experiences on social media and has helped others with the condition. Rock’s joke went over like a dead weight with her; she rolled her eyes. After initially laughing, Will Smith surprised the audience, and the world, by walking on stage and hitting Rock across the face.
Smith then returned to his seat and shouted “Keep my wife’s name out your f–king mouth” repeatedly at Rock.
Reports are that Rock was not aware of Jada's medical condition. The original airing of the Oscars did not show Jada's response to the slap or any response between herself and Will in the aftermath of the joke or slap.
Actor Michael Rapaport shared an "angle most people have not seen!" He added, "Look at Jada's reaction."
The video seems to have been filmed by someone behind the couple. It looks like Jada leans forward in a laughing motion after Will leaves Chris post-slap.
She then sits stock-still as Will yells at Rock from the audience.
The world was quick to comment.
"She laughed after Chris got slapped... it's funny now all of a sudden," wrote someone in one of the top comments. “She laughed??!?” another person wrote.
“Woah. Def didn’t see that laughing side of her during all this. What a shit show,” summed up a third.
On Tuesday, Will wrote an apology on Instagram. He noted his behavior was “unacceptable and inexcusable.”
He went on, "Violence in all of its forms is poisonous and destructive,” he wrote. "Jokes at my expense are a part of the job, but a joke about Jada’s medical condition was too much for me to bear and I reacted emotionally.
“I would like to publicly apologize to you, Chris. I was out of line and I was wrong,” he went on, before apologizing to “the Academy, the producers of the show, all the attendees and everyone watching around the world.”
The Academy has said they will be reviewing the incident and now it appears that Jada's talk show, Red Table Talk, plans to discuss the slap.
