Adam Aron, CEO of AMC Theaters, recently declared that tickets for The Batman will cost more than other films shown at the same theaters.

DC's reboot sees Robert Pattinson becoming the caped crusader as he takes on The Riddler (Paul Dano), who is murdering the elite of Gotham. Zoë Kravitz as Catwoman, Andy Serkis as the butler Alfred, Jeffrey Wright as Lieutenant James Gordon, Colin Farrell as The Penguin, and John Turturro as Carmine Falcone round out the cast.

AMC has had a tough go of things the last two years. In March of 2020, they were forced to close all of their theaters due to the Coronavirus pandemic, which, as we all know, lasted WAY longer than anyone anticipated. The company was left in some serious financial straights. AMC also fought with Universal Pictures after the studio said they would premiere films theatrical and on-demand streaming at the same time.

AMC did resolve its fight with Universal and has managed to reopen theaters, but as a result of the pandemic, the theater chain has lost over $4 billion.

AMC has attempted a few strategies to deal with the huge losses of the last few years. One of those strategies seems to be variable pricing — different prices for tickets to different movies.

EW reported that Aron announced the new method during an earnings call. He said that tickets for The Batman are going to be "slightly higher than the prices… for other movies playing in the same theaters at the same time."

Aron went on:

This is all quite novel in the United States, but actually, AMC has been doing it for years in our European theaters. Indeed, in Europe, we charge a premium for the best seats in the house, as do just about all other sellers of tickets in other industries — think sports events, concerts, and live theater, for example.

AMC also recently announced plans to take Bitcoin for tickets and briefly saw a wild stock increase of 300% due to Reddit users. But, of course, none of this means that AMC is out of the woods and the ticket pricing experiment really highlights that.

It's unclear how the U.S. theatergoers will take this news. The Batman does seem like a safe bet for AMC to experiment with: it's got great reviews and is a huge blockbuster film being released after years of the American public finding their moviegoing experience eradicated.

The Batman releases on March 4th, so we'll all find out soon!
