johnny depp joking

I don't know, seems like one of those things you just don't joke about...

Johnny Depp explained some of the violent, graphic texts he sent about his ex-wife, Amber Heard. He said he was not ashamed of what he said, but also clarified that it was not "intended to be real".

Depp has been on the stand for four days and finished his testimony yesterday. He answered questions from both his lawyers and Heard's. Both Heard and Depp have accused each other of domestic violence.

Heard first made allegations of abuse in 2016 when she filed for divorce and accused Depp of abusing her during the marriage. The pair eventually agreed to an expensive settlement with clauses meant to protect both Heard and Depp after the breakup, Heard continued to speak.

Heard’s 2018 Washington Post op-ed did not call out Depp by name, but Depp is suing Heard for libel over the piece. In the op-ed, Heard alleged that Depp verbally and physically abused her during the relationship. Depp is seeking $50 million in damages.

Heard's lawyers read texts from Depp on Thursday that were sent in 2013 that they say support their claim that he was repeatedly physically and sexually violent toward Heard.

"Let's burn amber!!!" read one text from Depp to actor Paul Bettany. "Let's drown her before we burn her!!!" Depp said to Bettany in another.

"I will f--k her burnt corpse afterwards to make sure she is dead," Depp wrote.

On Monday, his attorneys conducted their redirect and Depp said he was "ashamed" of the language, but also noted that he was quoting Monty Python And The Holy Grail, which includes a bit about burning witches.

"This is a film that we all watched when we were 10," Depp explained. "It's just irreverent and abstract humor. That's what we're referring to in those texts."

Depp's injured finger also came into play; Depp has said that Heard threw a vodka bottle at him, which severed the tip of his finger. Heard's attorneys pointed out that Depp has said before that he heard himself. They played an audio recording Thursday in which Depp said "the day that I chopped my finger off."

Ben King, Depp's former house manager, said he found the fingertip in the bar area. He said there was damage and a broken vodka bottle.

The next day, King said he asked Heard how the damage happened.

"She didn't give much explanation, if any," King relayed. "She did say, 'Ben, have you ever been so angry at someone that you just lost it with them?'"

Depp also explained why he chose to sue.

"It was like somebody hit me in the back of the head with a two-by-four," he stated. "I had had no ability to speak prior to, because even if I had done an interview to try and explain myself, it would turn into a hit piece, so my mouth was shut and this was the opportunity where I thought something's gotta be done. I couldn't take it anymore."
