Accusations have been flung back and forth during the defamation trial of Amber Heard. Prosecutors claim she tried to destroy Depp so her own career would flourish.

Johnny Depp's attorneys have claimed that Amber Heard's allegations of abuse against Depp were faked in order to advance her own acting career.

She first made allegations in 2016 when she filed for divorce and accused Depp of abusing her during the marriage. Fans have been split in two since with people firmly in either Depp or Heard's camps. All that said, after an expensive settlement with clauses meant to protect both Heard and Depp after the breakup, Heard continued to speak.

Heard's 2018 Washington Post op-ed did not call out Depp by name, but Depp is suing Heard for libel over the piece. In the op-ed, Heard alleged that Depp verbally and physically abused her during the relationship. Depp is seeking $50 million in damages.

Depp alleges Heard's op-ed discredited him even more and that he's seen opportunities for big roles dry up. He was forced to step down from the Fantastic Beasts franchise and has claimed he lost out on future Pirates of the Caribbean films due to the piece.

In the first day of arguments in the defamation trial over Heard's article, accusations were already flying.

ET Canada reported that Depp's attorneys, Benjamin Chew and Camille Vasquez, argued that the op-ed took advantage of the #MeToo movement and served as a promotion for Aquaman, in which Heard starred. Chew called Heard manipulative.

Deadline reported that Heard's attorneys, Ben Rottenborn and Elaine Bredehoft, called Depp an "obsessed ex-husband hellbent on revenge." They also shared photographic and video evidence of abuse and Depp's dishonesty.

Another potential issue for the Heard defense is a recording that reveals Heard was also abusive—she says in the recording that she hit Depp.

Amber Heard recently made news with a social media post about the trial. On Instagram, the actress wrote, “I never named [Depp], rather I wrote about the price women pay for speaking out against men in power.”

Both sides really have their work cut out for them in this case, which is playing out on CourtTV.
