You've probably had this experience: You find an amazing series and you fall in love with the pilot. The characters are great and the story seems to be solid, but then things go terribly, terribly wrong. As the series continues, the plot becomes hard to follow or just too ridiculous to be believable. Or maybe your favorite character gets written out in the worst way. Whatever the reason, the disappointment is always the same.
In a viral Reddit thread, u/TheScrollingBones, asked the question: "What TV show had a great pilot but became a huge disappointment a few episodes later?"
OP started by sharing their own feelings about a popular TV show. And it didn't take long for others to start piling on. The answers included everything from Helix to Glee.
That said, here are 20 shows that started strong but quickly went bad.
1. The Last Man on Earth
The Last Man On Earth had a terrific premise, but as soon as we learn the guy isn't the last man on earth (you don't say...), it became a dull and cringy soap opera you couldn't tell it was set in a post-apo world. It's a classic TV issue lately : give me some cash, let the cash flow during the pilot to attract viewers and let's hope they won't notice we don't have so much cash to spend anymore.
2. Helix
Not sure how many people know/remember this show, but "Helix". Holy smokes it has an intense pilot that sets a great premise, and while i personally didn't find the show all in all to be a "huge disappointment", it definitely is quite mediocre, if not a bit below.
3. Designated Survivor
[It] started out great, but then turned into utter shit in just a few episodes. It's a completely different show now... it went from a government conspiracy thriller show to some dramedy West Wing rip off, and it's not working.
4. Luke Cage
[It] was fine until they killed the best and most interesting character from any of the Marvel Netflix shows, half-way through the first season. A big problem is also Luke himself just not being that interesting. He's just a big strong guy with some hints of a personality, but ultimately being very bland.
5. The Cape
The Cape was a short-lived superhero show that promised to be both grounded and suitably campy about a cop framed for murder and learning to be a hero from a group of circus performers. After the first couple of episodes it just got too boring and serious, but the pilot was very entertaining.
6. Glee
It had a smart, original, quirky pilot that poked fun at the type of over saturated after-school-special soap it became after the first thirteen episodes. The back nine of season one is where it started to fall apart, but it was still pretty solid. Season two was a train wreck and the rest of the show was almost unwatchable.
7. The Following
Terrific Pilot, genuinely intense thriller show. Then episode 2 was awful, episode 3 was really good but pretty much all of it after that was mediocre to downright abysmal
8. Under the Dome
The first episode of Under the Dome was absolutely brilliant. The first season was flawed but watchable. The second season went completely off the fucking rails. I gave it up about the time they found a portal out and didn't just immediately round everyone up and leave.
9. Sleepy Hollow
Sleepy Hollow is one of my favorite pilots of all time but the show never lived up to the potential set up in that episode.
10. Revenge
Damn good 1st season - but after that just one of the worst tv ever.

11. The Strain
High watermark of The Strain was the gas station episode. Vampires are closing in, fett moves to the pumps to get gas to set them on fire then hesitates, shrugs, and hits "premium."
One of the best moments in any thriller and subsequent episodes never came close to matching it.
12. Wayward Pines
Pilot was amazing, and first season was pretty good, then season 2 came along...
13. The Blacklist
It hooks you with a cool premise, but then just a mere half a dozen episodes later it you realise how much of a joke the show is.
14. Flash Forward
Such a great premise and opening, then every single episode that followed was so very bad. Full of pretentious dialogue with no substance, no plan, characters did things for no reason, it was enraging
15. Star Trek Voyager
It was a fascinating premise. An unexplored quadrant, away from home, no space ports and having to take on crew members who hate Starfleet and deal with missing department heads. Sadly it became very formulaic quite quickly and the idea of friction between Starfleet and Maquis lasted for maybe season 1 but was pretty much not an issue after season 2.
16. The Walking Dead
Lasted one season before going to sh-t.
17. Preacher
LOVED the pilot, was amazing. I still watch the show, but its one of those things that has a few really high highs, but many, many really low lows. The good episodes are really awesome to me, but it has like 80% of the season being kind of, well, a boring slog fest that I just push through to get to the fun parts. Show could've been so much better.
18. The Killing
The Killing is the major example of that. I still think the first episode is one of the best Pilots ever made - beautifully shot (by Patty Jenkins of Wonder Woman/Monster fame) portrayal of grief and hopelessness, i remember when it came out people were hyping it up as the next Mad Men or Breaking Bad for AMC. But almost instantly show turned into a gigantic mess with red herrings that are completely forgotten by the time next episode starts, noire atmosphere that becomes borderline comical due to 24/7 rain and detectives making one idiotic decision after another because that was the only way writers could move the plot forward.
19. Revolution
This was a great pilot with a really interesting setup. The season was let down by fairly unlikeable, whingey lead characters and a bit of a hokey plot.
20. The Expanse
I found it very boring after the first episode. I had very high expectations for that show.
