Amber Heard testified in court that Warner Bros. phased out her character, Mera, in the Aquaman sequel.
The actress played a very prominent role in the first Aquaman movie but said that her role in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom has been “pared down” due to backlash from her Washington Post op-ed and the resulting defamation trial.
Heard said in court that Warner Bros. initially didn’t want her to return for the sequel and that she “fought really hard” to come back. She went on to say that she was given multiple scripts, each with progressively less and less screen time.
“I was given a script. And then given new versions of the script that had taken away scenes that had action in it, that depicted my character and another character, without giving spoilers away, two characters fighting with one another. They basically took a bunch out of my role. They just removed a bunch.”
The actress revealed to the court that she had been released from her Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom contract.
"They released me from my contract and I've fought to stay in it," Heard said.
There is an ongoing petition to remove her entirely from the Aquaman sequel, which currently has over 4.2 million signatures, but the showrunners have claimed it will not sway them.
The producers said that they wanted to “do what’s right for the film,” even with the surrounding controversy. Grace Randolph, a film journalist known for her scoops, posted recently that Heard has less than ten minutes of screen time in the film.
Heard also recently appeared in Zack Snyder's Justice League, which was released on HBO Max last year. The online release included scenes with Heard in them that were not in the theatrical release of the movie.
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is already delayed until March of 2023, so at this point, anything could be possible with how much of Heard’s character will appear in the final cut of the film. Only time will tell.
