johnny depp suing amber heard

In an exclusive interview with NBC News’s Savannah Guthrie, Amber Heard spoke about the difficulties in coming forward about domestic abuse.

She questioned whether any other women involved with Johnny Depp would have come forward with allegations like she did, given the outcome of the trial.

Guthrie said to Heard, "His lawyers argued at trial that none of his prior relationships — not one woman — has come forward and said he physically hit them. You were the only one."

"Look what happened to me when I came forward," Heard responded. "Would you?"

A number of Depp’s exes testified at the trial, among them Winona Ryder, Kate Moss, and Vanessa Paradis, all of whom only had good things to say about him as a partner.

Ryder said she was “shocked, confused and upset” by the allegations, while Moss denied the rumors that he pushed her down the stairs while they were dating. Paradis dated Depp for 14 years and called him a “kind, attentive, generous and non-violent person.”

Another ex, Ellen Barkin, testified in court that Depp was “jealous” and “controlling” in their relationship.

Heard went on in the interview to discuss her fears of speaking publicly, citing a worry that Depp may sue her once more for defamation.

"I took for granted what I assumed was my right to speak,” she said. “I'm scared that no matter what I do or what I say or how I say it — every step that I take will present another opportunity for this sort of silencing, which is what, I guess, a defamation lawsuit is meant to do — to take your voice.”

Heard told Guthrie she stands by "every word" of her testimony from the trial, and will continue to do so until her "dying day."

The Aquaman actress struggled even with physically going to court due to the throngs of Depp supporters outside the courthouse, and barricades had to be put in place to keep them back for Heard’s safety.

"In the courtroom, I am testifying about sexual assault and violence in front of a jury in a packed courtroom of people who are expressing their disdain for me," Heard said.

The publicly-filmed trial was followed closely by people who created memes, videos, and more largely in support of Depp.

Heard said in the interview she didn’t “blame” the jury for their verdict, saying, “I'm not a good victim, I get it. I'm not a likable victim. I'm not a saint. I'm not asking anyone to like me.”

The problem, says Heard, is that domestic violence survivors may have a harder time being heard and believed now.

“What I learned in that trial is it's never going to be good enough. If you have proof, then it was a scheme, it was a hoax. If you don't have proof, it didn't happen.”

A spokesperson for Depp said in a statement, “It's unfortunate that while Johnny is looking to move forward with his life, the defendant and her team are back to repeating, reimagining, and re-litigating matters that have already been decided by the Court and a verdict that was unanimously and unequivocally decided by a jury in Johnny's favor.”

Heard told Guthrie in the interview that she will appeal the decision and wants to focus on being a mother at present.
