If the leaks are anything to go by, the classic GoldenEye 007 video game could very well be making its triumphant return.
A remastering of the James Bond classic has been rumored for years, most recently in January and then March of this year from achievements spotted on the Microsoft Store. This most recent leak lends some credence to that rumor, which seems to be becoming reality.
The historic James Bond game was originally released on August 25, 1997 for the N64 gaming console, and is coming up on its 25-year anniversary.
@Wario64 is a video games industry insider and this past Sunday, they shared GoldenEye 007 achievements they found on Xbox servers.
According to a report by True Achievements, “Recently, the achievements were spotted on the Xbox website along with stat tracking across six different categories, but digging a little deeper, we’ve noticed that Rare has also updated several achievement names and added some new achievement art.”
The report went on to say, “When comparing the achievement list that we first scanned in back in January to the list that was discovered over on Xbox.com, we can see that Rare has updated the names of 11 different achievements. Some are quite simple changes while others have been altered completely.”
“One achievement that referenced Dr. Doak, a double agent who works in the Arkangelsk chemical weapons facility that was named after original GoldenEye 007 developer David Doak, has been changed removing the reference.”
Rare, the game’s developer, has long been interested in remastering the game, but it has been stalled due to licensing agreements until, perhaps, now.
Back in 2016, Phil Spencer, the head of Xbox, revealed in a statement that “GoldenEye has always been a rights issue, not a ‘getting code to run’ issue.”
If these rumors are to be believed, now would be the perfect time for the remastered game to be released, with the Xbox and Bethesda Games Showcase coming up on June 12 and the 25-year anniversary later this year.
