The popular Joker film helmed by Todd Phillips hit over $1 billion worldwide in the box office and won two Oscars, so it comes as no surprise that a sequel may be in the works — but no one expected a musical.
The Hollywood Reporter shared the news on Monday, June 13 that Lady Gaga is in talks to potentially star in Joker: Folie à Deux alongside Joker star Joaquin Phoenix, though even the Joker himself isn’t officially signed on yet, in spite of a photo snapped of him reading the script for the movie, written by Phillips and Scott Silver.
If Lady Gaga does sign onto the movie, she would be portraying a very different kind of Harley Quinn than has been seen on screen most recently by Margot Robbie in The Suicide Squad and Birds of Prey. Robbie didn’t sing, after all.
The most bizarre twist of this reporting, however, is that according to THR, Folie à Deux is planned to be a musical.
It of course makes sense that Lady Gaga is being tapped to play the Ph.D. (or possibly MD)-wielding baddie given this news, but still, the internet is torn on if a superhero musical movie will be good. It’s certainly worked on stage as a (parody) comedy! Lady Gaga certainly has the chops, and after Phoenix’s performance in the Johnny Cash biopic Walk the Line, it’s clear he has the voice for it as well.
Amusingly, artist BossLogic seemed to have predicted a Joker musical back in 2017, and recently updated his La La Land Joker poster to showcase Phoenix and Gaga.
The internet, of course, went wild with the news, with the easiest joke of the bunch riffing off of Gaga’s famous “Poker Face” song.
Reactions are mixed, with people on two sides of the coin: either thinking that it is a terrible idea that will fail miserably or a fascinating and delightful risk.
There is no release date as yet for the film, but it will be interesting to see where the production takes it moving forward, especially if Gaga becomes the next Dr. Harleen Quinzel.
