Hollywood's nicest guy, Tom Hanks, recently showed another side of himself the moment somebody messed with his wife, Rita Wilson, after fans swarmed the couple as they left a restaurant in New York. While they were making their way back to the car, Wilson momentarily slowed her pace and the crowd of fans walked into her, causing her to shout and stumble, nearly losing her balance on the pavement.

This set Hanks off, causing him to turn and face the fans, telling them in no uncertain terms that they had messed up.

"That is my wife," he says, voice escalating. "Back the f--- off!"

Hanks, Wilson, and their security were moving quickly toward their vehicles after leaving the restaurant, as celebrities have to do to avoid getting waylaid by fans and paparazzi when they go out. A small group of fans followed Hanks closely, taking photos and video, with one appearing to hold a deflated volleyball and a pen, saying "it's been a long time" and "how've you been?"

This may have been an avid Hanks fan, with the volleyball bringing up instant memories of one of his iconic films, Cast Away. The fan seemed likely to want Hanks to sign the ball, but the actor was focused on getting to where he was going. He gave a few smiles and bows initially, but was not as friendly as he sometimes can be.

With all that going on, nobody noticed that Wilson (his wife, not the volleyball) had slowed, and the fans walked right into her.

"Stop it!" Wilson commanded.

Hanks is visibly angry as he shouts at the crowd for "knocking over my wife" and stares them down for a few seconds until security leads him away.

"Sorry about that, Tom," one of the fans says.

Some of the other fans or paparazzi seem to want to blame the others for what happened.

"What are y'all doing?" says the fan who actually walked into Wilson.

Hanks can be forgiven for swearing in defense of his wife, especially after showing patience with fans in so many other cases, earning him a reputation as a genuinely nice man. Never being able to leave a restaurant in peace probably gets annoying, and he may be under extra stress as he travels on a press tour to promote his latest upcoming film, Elvis. He only recently returned from a screening in Brisbane, Australia, with the film's star, Austin Butler.

On social media, fans were quick to defend Hanks, praising him for standing up for his wife.

In fact, there may be nothing to defend the actor from here, as nobody seems to be criticizing his reaction, even if they were surprised to hear such anger coming from a typically calm and cool guy. The man who ran into Wilson and then tried to pass the blame to the other fans, however, is suffering a bit of a roast.
