Jamie Lee Curtis is under fire after she made some rather embarrassing admissions about her first impression of Ana de Armas, a 15-year veteran Cuban actress.

De Armas is best-known for her phenomenal performance as Marta in the 2019 film Knives Out, but it wasn’t her first movie by any means. She's also starred in Blade Runner 2049, War Dogs, and Knock Knock. In addition to these Hollywood films, de Armas has appeared in many Spanish language films and TV series since 2006.

In spite of her lengthy resume, de Armas’s Knives Out costar Jamie Lee Curtis admitted that she had no idea who she was when they first met, telling Elle for de Armas's cover story that she thought the younger actress was an “inexperienced, unsophisticated young woman” before they met.

“I assumed — and I say this with real embarrassment — because she had come from Cuba, that she had just arrived,” Curtis told the magazine. “I made an assumption that she was an inexperienced, unsophisticated young woman. That first day, I was like, ‘Oh, what are your dreams?'”

Curtis said she was impressed by de Armas and wanted to introduce her to people in the industry, from Steven Spielberg (so she could play Maria in West Side Story) to her godchildren, Maggie and Jake Gyllenhaal. Curtis was shocked to find that de Armas already knew Jake.

The actress went on, “She is not as fancy as maybe the [Estée Lauder] advertisements would have you believe. She leans in, interested; talking to her is kind of give-and-take. She’s curious and asks a lot of questions.”

De Armas’s next leading role is in Netflix’s upcoming film about Marilyn Monroe, titled Blonde. Curtis’s father, Tony Curtis, actually starred alongside Monroe in Some Like It Hot, and de Armas took the opportunity to show off photos of herself dressed as Monroe to Curtis.

"She showed me a picture of her as Marilyn,” Curtis reminisced. “My father was in Some Like It Hot, and I have a lot of photos of my father and Marilyn. It was a couple of still pictures and one video of her moving through space with no audio. But it was so shocking because she was Marilyn.”

A number of folks online are unimpressed with the casual racism of Curtis’s comments about de Armas, and are taking her to task for the way she talked about the younger actress.
