Executive Producer of Jeopardy!, Mike Richards, has resigned from his hosting position ... already.

Sony Pictures Television

Sony Pictures Television tapped Richards as the new permanent host of Jeopardy! on August 11th along with Mayim Bialik. However, comments from Richards from several years ago on The Randumb Show resurfaced. And those comments... were rough.

According to The Ringer, he referred to a model as a "booth slut" and called friends she was pictured with “really frumpy and overweight” saying “they look fat and not good in the picture.” He was also accused of discrimination while working as a producer on The Price Is Right.

Sony was pressured to take action and they have removed Richards as host but he will stay on as executive producer.

Richards made a statement about the comments:

"It pains me that these past incidents and comments have cast such a shadow on Jeopardy! as we look to start a new chapter," he said.  "As I mentioned last week, I was deeply honored to be asked to host the syndicated show and was thrilled by the opportunity to expand my role. However, over the last several days it has become clear that moving forward as host would be too much of a distraction for our fans and not the right move for the show. As such, I will be stepping down as host effective immediately. As a result, we will be canceling production today."

He continued, "SPT will now resume the search for a permanent syndicated host. In the meantime, we will be bringing back guest hosts to continue production for the new season, details of which will be announced next week. I want to apologize to each of you for the unwanted negative attention that has come to Jeopardy! over the last few weeks and for the confusion and delays this is now causing. I know I have a lot of work to do to regain your trust and confidence."

The show has had a rotating schedule of guest hosts since Alek Trebek's passing in 2020. They've brought on Bialik,  LeVar Burton, George Stephanopoulos, Ken Jennings and others. Burton has been the fan favorite; he posted an interestingly timed tweet right after Richards' resignation.
