The new teaser trailer for Spider-Man: No Way Home is setting Twitter on fire with all of the fan theories that seemed to be hinted at—or even confirmed. At least, some fans think that Sony Pictures is confirming we'll be seeing Tobey Maguire and the Green Goblin pop into Tom Holland's world. With the multiverse, all things are possible, and it seems like the executives in control of the MCU have realized how many more properties they can develop if all our favorite characters can keep getting resurrected in a slightly different costume.
The last Spider-Man movie left Peter Parker in a very difficult position when his identity was revealed to the entire world in connection to a number of crimes, including murder.
In the trailer, we see that the ramifications of having no secret identity are serious not only for Peter, but for his friends and family. So, he turns to Dr. Strange to do a spell erasing everyone's memories of him being Spider-Man and it doesn't quite go as hoped. A big hole to the multiverse seemingly gets ripped open, and all these old protagonists start falling through.
So, let's get to the fan theories.
Theory: The trailer confirmes Tobey Maguire will appear as Peter Parker
People have been wondering if we'll be seeing older Spider-Men who aged out of the role years ago. The most convincing bit of evidence is seeing Alfred Molina, reappearing as Doctor Octopus. Gotta say, Molina is as electric on screen as always! Even though his only line in the trailer is "Hello, Peter!"
That's convinced some fans that he must be addressing Tobey Maguire, because why would he recognize Tom Holland as Peter Parker?
I'm not entirely convinced, since Doc Ock would certainly recognize a Spider-suit if he saw one. Assuming there's a Peter Parker inside is a safe bet and the man is a doctor. He possesses a genius-level IQ, even if he mostly uses it for evil.
Theory: Green Goblin will apear in the movie
There is a moment in the trailer where we very briefly hear Willem Defoe's famous Green Goblin laugh. Well, it's not famous so much as it is embedded deeply into my psyche, because I recognized it immediately. James Franco, on the other hand, does not seem to be putting in an appearance.
Franco's reputation as a sex pest has come out since he starred opposite Maguire as his best friend and eventual enemy, so putting him in this movie, even in a small cameo, would be a PR nightmare. I'm betting he won't show.
Theory: Mephisto will play a role in the movie
An important part of the Spider-Man comic book story is the appearance of Mephisto, who is sort of the Devil of the MCU. Comicbook reports that the source material for No Way Home is based on a comic storyline called One More Day in which Peter makes a deal with Mephisto to save his Aunt May's life and gives up his marriage to MJ. Mary-Jane, in turn, goes to Mephisto and makes a deal so everyone forgets her husband's real identity. In the trailer, Dr. Strange is the person Peter turns to, but some are wondering if it's even really Dr. Strange. Comicbook breaks down why:
It's here with Strange that things get quite interesting. The majority of the shots involving Strange in the trailer take place in the Sanctum Sanctorum, which happens to be covered with a layer of snow and ice. Interestingly enough, in Dante Alighieri's Inferno, the Ninth Circle of Hell — the level where the devil resides — is covered entirely in ice. There's also been some questions made about Strange's character throughout the trailer, especially with not being able to complete a spell simply because Parker continues to annoyingly ask questions.
There's also another shot of Strange and Parker seemingly in a chase on a train. In this shot, Strange can be found without his Cloak of Levitation, something he's rarely seen without. It's an iconic part of his costume. Is this sequence actually between friends? Or maybe Spider-Man figured out someone was actually playing Strange and it's an Avenger vs. Avengers fight scene.
There also seem to be some devil mentions in the trailer itself:
The devil's in the details.
Theory: Charlie Cox was in the trailer
More devil talk! This time it's about Matt Murdock, otherwise known as Daredevil, and I guess the actor who played him in three seasons of the Netflix series about the blind superhero, Charlie Cox, has very distinctive forearms:
Is the lawyer talking to Peter actually Murdock? Or just some character actor who will not be questioning how much hair is too much hair?
Theory: The voice at the end of the trailer is Mephisto or James Franco's Harry Osborne
There is a voice, gravelly and menacing, that says, "Be careful what you wish for, Parker," and debate over who's voice it belongs to could bolster several of these theories:
Some people are clinging to the possibility of James Franco and are convinced it's him. Others think it's Dr. Strange, or at least Benedict Cumberbatch playing Mephisto who is pretending to be Dr. Strange. Layers upon layers people. We have until December 17th, when the movie is released, to talk it out.
