Andrew Garfield warned fans to temper their expectations: Spider-Man: No Way Home may not exceed their expectations.

Sony

Garfield has played the titular character in both The Amazing Spider-Man and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 but since those films, he's starred in smaller movies and eschewed big blockbusters. However, rumors that he would appear in the third MCU solo film for Tom Holland have been swirling.

Spider-Man: No Way Home will deal with the multiverse issues opened by Loki and Doctor Strange's meddling. Villains from past films like Doc Ock and Electro will appear. It's also been said that Willem Dafoe's Green Goblin might turn up. These rumors led fans to believe that Garfield and Tobey Maguire, also a prior Spider-Man, would make an appearance in the new movie. Garfield has said that he is NOT appearing in No Way Home, but expectations are still very, very high that he will be in the movie.

And this troubles Garfield.

Marvel/Sony

In an interview with Newsweek, Garfield said that he knows what's in the pipe for the new movie and it's not what fans think they're getting. He worries that No Way Home is going to be a huge disappointment because of all the speculation and he can't do anything but continue to deny his involvement with the new movie.

It's an exciting idea that people are kind of obsessing over and I would be too if I was, you know, just, out there not knowing what was going on. But I do know what's going on and I'm afraid it's going to be very disappointing for people. What can I do? I have to let people be disappointed. That's a big part of my recovery in my life is, I have to allow people to have their own feelings, I can't mitigate or control anyone else's experience. That's a practice of mine. So if they want to create an expectation for themselves. That's up to them.

Garfield, Newsweek

It is interesting that he says he knows what's happening with No Way Home; Marvel is usually incredibly secretive. Fans immediately glommed to that, citing it as a slip: he wouldn't know anything if he wasn't involved! There were also rumored photos of Garfield on the set, so ... It's getting a little hard to believe him when he swears he isn't in this movie.

It's DEFINITELY likely that if he or Maguire are in the movies, their appearances are incredibly short, but at this point... it's all a guessing game.
