If you're wondering about Grimace, the McDonaldland character with a thirst for McDonald's shakes, wonder no longer. The mystery around the strange purple Ronald McDonald sidekick was revealed in a CBC News interview over the week, though the answer is pretty disturbing.
The interview, with Brian Bates, who was named Outstanding Manager of the Year by the fast-food giant, touched on a range of topics before rolling around to Grimace.
"He is an enormous taste bud, but a taste bud nonetheless," said Bates, going on to explain that his purpose is to show that McDonald's food tastes good.
The theory that Grimace is a taste bud has been out there for a while.
Back in 2014, McDonald's invited people to ask about "McD's nostalgia," and Margo Padilla wanted to know, simply, "What is Grimace?"
The answer, at the time, was that "he is the embodiment of a milkshake or a taste bud."
Banks appears to have cleared up the mystery, but some people are not exactly at ease with the revelation. Kyle Daly tweeted, simply, "Reeling from this."
Someone chose to respond to that with the observation, "Grimace can taste with his whole body."
Another chimed in with a personal remembrance tainted by the revelation. "I went to a McDonald's in Victoria, British Columbia that had a mural of the characters playing baseball," the tweeter recalled. "Grimace was running the bases and the artist clearly gave him butt cheeks. I'm troubled to think of a taste bud that had butt cheeks."
Others wanted to use the occasion to explore Grimace's origins as a harbinger of evil.
But Laura Stetser spoke for many when she said, "I’m sorry… what?!?"
