After the new trailer dropped today, the internet is abuzz with news of the next Matrix sequel. And some people are wondering why Morpheus isn't in The Matrix 4.
After all, we said goodbye to the trilogy all the way back in 2003 — no one ever expected it to reboot two DECADES later with a fourth film in the franchise. But it did just that and in 2019 The Matrix Resurrections was announced to the excitement of fans everywhere.
Speculation ran wild about who would be back and who wouldn't make an appearance. Some were upset that Laurence Fishburne would not be reprising his role as the captain of the Nebuchadnezzar, Morpheus. His character was, after all, just as important as Neo to the story.

Collider asked Fishburne if having to answer questions about The Matrix and his absence was getting old. Fishbourne said, “No, I completely understand that . . .So it doesn’t get old. I am not in the next Matrix movie, and you’d have to ask Lana Wachowski why because I don’t have an answer for that.”
So while some fans are still hoping he may pop back into the film, The Matrix Online, a huge multiplayer online role-playing game, may have a clue about Morpheus' fate.
Why Morpheus Isn't In The Matrix 4 (AKA The Matrix Resurrections)

The Matrix Online is a canon game with the blessings of the Wachowskis, which means the game is basically an extension of the films' universe. Morpheus appears at the beginning of the story but meets a violent end that players weren't too thrilled about.
In Chapter 1.2, the Machines refused to give Morpheus Neo's remains; Morpheus then conducts terrorist strikes to reveal the hidden code of the Matrix for everyone to see. The bluepills see the code, which causes awakenings and hysteria: all because of Morpheus.
Morpheus then plants a code bomb in the Rumbaar water treatment facility and discovers a program called the Assassin is on his trail. The killer bends the code of the Matrix and ambushes Morpheus, killing him with multiple gunshot wounds.

Morpheus' death has been the subject of a lot of debate. Some players argue that Morpheus isn't dead because there is an "Emergency Jack-Out" for redpills. It's a respawn advancement and eliminates total death if someone dies inside the Matrix. However, despite this little loophole, it still may not work: the assassin's bullets had a code encryption called a "kill code" that overrides the "emergency jack-out" code.
Of course, the rumors that he faked his death continue. A few redpills received an email from Morpheus saying he would "fade away" before he is killed. His remains were also never found. So maybe... just maybe...
However it shakes out, fans are curious to see how The Matrix Online may play into Resurrections. Regardless, Morpheus' absence will need to be addressed direction since many fans will likely have never heard of the MMORPG.
The Matrix Resurrections launches in theaters and HBO Max on Dec. 22.
