Divorce is often an incredibly painful and contentious experience, but it can also be an enormous relief when the papers are finally signed. It's time to move on and heal. Once it's finalized, you never have to see that person who has been in your life again. It might be a little sad, but divorce can also be celebrated.
That is what it always seemed like Nicole Kidman was doing right after she divorced Tom Cruise in the iconic photos of her post-paper signing walk.
The photos shot by a paparazzi photographer seem to show Kidman shouting with glee as she walks down the street. They quickly went viral and get used all the time as a meme for joyful celebration:
A writer named Liz Maupin told BuzzFeed that she separated from her husband three whole years ago, but their divorce was only finalized recently. That's a long time to have someone hanging over your head. When it finally became official, she decided to throw herself a little party and then went shopping. Maupin recreated the iconic outfit Kidman was wearing in her photos and screamed with joy:
"I wanted to celebrate the finality of it and starting a new chapter in my life," she said. "I love that photo of Nicole so much. I think it says so much about relief and freedom."
"Everyone cheered; it was so nice," she added. Friends posted shots of the moment, too:
"I think there’s still stigma around divorce, which is so unnecessary, and I wanted to really have a positive experience at the end of it all and just celebrate being me again, without a tether to another person, and starting over," said Maupin. "Nicole’s outfit definitely helped remind me of my newfound freedom."
And Maupin has no regrets. "It was absolutely empowering and so fun," said Maupin. "I chose to make the party no-boys-allowed. We had an absolute blast. I highly recommend having a divorce party if you find yourself divorced someday."
I'll keep that in mind.
