Johnny Depp is filming a movie directed by French filmmaker Maiwenn starting this summer, in which he plays French King Louis XV, according to Variety. It's his first major role since Depp was accused of abusing his ex-wife Amber Heard. The two have been embroiled in a series of court cases for a number of years, prolonged by Depp's libel case against The Sun for referring to him as a "wife-beater." He lost the defamation suit and was fired from his role on the Fantastic Beasts franchise.
The 58-year-old appeared in the 2020 film Minamata, playing photojournalist W. Eugene Smith. He is currently filming the animated mini-series Puffins. There aren't many details about the new movie, except it will be filmed in locations in Paris and at Versailles Palace and the director will be playing his last mistress, Jeanne du Barry. Depp has a long history in France, having lived there for a number of years with his ex-wife, Vanessa Paradis.
Depp is also maintaining a $50 million defamation lawsuit against Heard in the United States, for her 2018 op-ed in The Washington Post in which she described herself as a domestic abuse survivor, though she did not mention Depp by name.
Depp says he is a victim of "cancel culture." The actor is generally more popular in Europe and was awarded a film prize in San Sebastian, Spain, following his cancelation. He used his acceptance speech to talk about the dangers of cancel culture to the audience assembled to celebrate him.
"It can be seen as an event in history that lasted for however long it lasted, this cancel culture, this instant rush to judgment based on what essentially amounts to polluted air," said Depp. "It's so far out of hand now that I can promise you that no one is safe. Not one of you. No one out that door. No one is safe. It takes one sentence and there's no more ground, the carpet has been pulled."
