Nope. It's not Mephisto, despite what fans might assume... A new fan theory says it might actually be another Marvel villain.

Marvel/Sony

I first stumbled on this fan theory over on Reddit in a thread by u/Aggravating-Humor-88. The Reddit user says that Doctor Strange is actually Loki in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Here's what the fan proposed:

Loki wants to open the multiverse back up so that he can find Sylvie again. He disguises himself as Dr. Strange and thats why he does something as reckless as try to cast a spell that would remove Peter Parker from everyone's memories but really it was designed to allow him to travel the multiverse or whatever Idk.

Dr.Strange is shown standing in his house that is frozen...and as we all know..Loki is an ICE GIANT. THREE POINT DUNK on ya'll. Also his hair is slicked back different, so you know its him.

And then Owen Wilson is there and he's on a jet ski and everyone is happy. And there is an alligator with horns. The end.

Reddit

This comes as a theory because the trailer for Spider-Man: No Way Home shows Doctor Strange acting... uh, strangely. He just doesn't seem to be himself. The trailer shows the Doctor and Peter working together to try to erase Spider-Man's identity from the minds of everyone in the world.

Marvel/Sony

Doctor Strange is usually very reserved. He only casts spells in dire situations; he took a knee during the Infinity Saga and really only used his powers to go through the ways the Avengers could win against Thanos. He disappeared after the snap and didn't screw with the timeline for anything — including saving Tony Stark. So why is Strange wiping the memory of Peter Parker from EVERYONE ON EARTH? It doesn't make sense!

Marvel

So some fans theorized that Mephisto posed as the Doctor, but there's another option too... And it's Loki, the God of Mischief.

Marvel

Loki, says the Redditor, has more to gain by impersonating Stephen Strange; Loki is the one who has a motive for tearing open the timelines on Earth, and the theory poses that Loki wants to find Sylvie and correct their mistake. How better to do that than pose as Doctor Strange?

Marvel/Sony

AND Loki has transformed into other people before—his father and Captain America, for example.

So what do you think? Does this new theory have merit?
