A real tragedy on a set last night has sparked remembrances of Brandon Lee, who also died in a tragic gun accident.

Miramax

In short, Alec Baldwin was firing a prop gun on the set of Rust and accidentally fatally shot the cinematographer, Halyna Hutchins, and wounded the director, Joel Souza.

Joel Souza is being treated for his injuries at the hospital and police interviewed the cast and crew of the set of Rust, including Baldwin. No charges have been filed.

To not note that this accident comes as IATSE (the crew guild) is negotiating for a safer workplace would be irresponsible: mistakes were definitely made on this set. Under no circumstances should anyone's life be risked on a film set.

As people come to terms with this tragedy, many are making comparisons to the death of Brandon Lee on the set of The Crow in 1993. Lee was killed when a prop gun that hadn't been checked and cleared fired a projectile during a scene in which Lee's character is killed.

The incident shook Hollywood, as did this one.

Lee's family put out a statement on Twitter.

Brandon Lee's death forced stunt coordinators to be more careful with prop firearms. In 2005, the man who fired the shot that killed Lee spoke about the trauma the incident gave him.

"What happened to Brandon was a tragic accident. It's something I'm going to live with ... It took me the time it took to be able to not so much put it in perspective but to be able to move on with my life," he said to Extra TV.

"It's very personal. It's something that I wanna make sure when I work that it's never repeated. Therefore, I'm very conscious of things going awry on set."

Hutchins' guild, The Cinematographer's Guild, also put out a statement: "We received the devastating news this evening, that one of our members, Halyna Hutchins, the Director of Photography on a production called 'Rust' in New Mexico died from injuries sustained on the set,"

National President John Lindley and National Executive Director Rebecca Rhine said in a statement. "The details are unclear at this moment, but we are working to learn more, and we support a full investigation into this tragic event. This is a terrible loss, and we mourn the passing of a member of our Guild's family."

This tragedy and its causes are still unfolding; our hearts go out to all involved.
