It is 30 years since Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon began working on the iconic video game, and he decided to share some behind-the-scenes footage of the creative process featuring the famous Scorpion and his infamous Spear Move. In the clip, an actor dressed as Scorpion, who Boon writes had to keep his actions very limited to suit the low frame count needed for 1991 hardware constraints.

Boon is seen working with co-creator John Tobias, and he comes on camera to say to Tobias, "You know what would be a cool-ass move?...It would be cool if something went… FAH!"

He makes a throwing motion, then adds, "Like uh, an arrow or whatever."

And so "get over here" was born! Boon adds some details about how they figured everything out and decided to make the throw at chest height to allow opponents a chance to duck under it.

Scorpion has evolved over time, but his move has stuck with him even as the quality of the video games themselves have improved:

From small beginnings come great K.O.s.
