Here's the good news: rumors of the evil doll Annabelle from the horror film The Conjuring escaping her prison have been greatly exaggerated. In 2020, that became an online story that took off and even got added to her official Wikipedia page, according to VICE News, and everyone thought it was pretty appropriate for the general 2020 vibe.
If you are unfamiliar with Annabelle's story, she is a terrifying object who was own by demonologist Ed Warren and his wife, Lorraine, who happens to be a trance medium. They must have a lot in common. The late couple took the doll from a woman named Donna in the early 1970s. Donna claimed she was experiencing some unsettling hauntings since she got the doll. When Lorraine channeled the spirits she determined it was possessed by the spirit of a 7-year-old girl named Annabelle Higgins.
The couple took it home, to Donna's relief, and put it in a protective case and then on display in their occult museum in Connecticut. Well, their son-in-law Tony Spera, himself a paranormal expert and museum curator, came out with a YouTube video refuting the rumors.
Spera showed that Annabelle is still in her case.
"Annabelle’s alive—well, I shouldn’t say alive—Annabelle’s here, in all her infamous glory," he said. "She never left the museum. I have high-tech security here. If she had left the museum I’d instantly know if something happened, or somebody broke in […] But Annabelle's here, she didn't go anywhere."
He added, "She's nothing to play with," he said. So true!
VICE interviewed a woman named Kat Blowers, a woman who investigates haunted items and safely rehomes haunted dolls through her Etsy shop. I don't see how that can be done safely, but she does seem like the person to ask about what happens to an evil doll trying to get on the loose.
"Depending on how well the containment is in [the protective case], which I hear is pretty strong, I think Annabelle would go back to doing the exact same type of hauntings she has been confirmed doing in the past," Blowers told VICE. "She has been given so much attention from the living world, she would be even stronger than she was last time she was active."
Even stronger! And she has a whole movie franchise now. Blowers said the doll would then latch on to a "weak soul" and get back to her haunting ways. She becomes stronger every year just from us thinking about her.
"Some spirited items do go dormant, but I don't think Annabelle ever will," Blowers said. "We are feeding her with every article, every glance. Every time we type her name, she is getting that energy, and she will never stop feeding off of that."
Spera says the rumors started when an interview with actress Annabelle Wallace was translated to Chinese and then back into English, changing a story about her "running" to "escaping."
Obviously, when you hear the name Annabelle you think of the doll first.
