Filmmaker David Ma has been using his TikTok to show us how the proverbial sausage gets made—when it comes to cinema, that is. So, the next time you see your favorite actor rocking six-pack abs while chain-smoking and drinking an entire Mafia family under the table, yet somehow also still able to lift an entire Volkswagen into the air as he pounds down enough coffee to sate all of Portland, you will know for sure: WE ARE BEING LIED TO.
David Ma, who has a million TikTok followers and was one of Adweek’s Top 100 Creatives of 2021, has pulled back the curtain on all sorts of little industry secrets.
For example, when actors like Brad Pitt or Jon Hamm portray nicotine-fueled characters such as Tyler Durden or Don Draper, they usually aren’t actually smoking. Not only are they faking it—they’re not even using real cigarettes, but an herbal blend that reads on camera just like the real thing.
Similarly, most beverage containers are completely empty.
Ma also reveals some secrets of “eat-acting” in a two-part video explanation.
He's right: you’ll never be able to un-see how the camera cuts away after an actor takes a bite of food. (So they can spit out their characters’ meals, directly into set buckets!) You'll also start noticing the actors who push their food around their plates without actually ever taking a single bite of anything.
And, although we all are aware that actors don’t actually “do it” in order to film intimate love scenes (except that one time with Chloe Sevigny, and that...however many times, under the direction of John Waters), Ma also sheds some light onto how those scenes are filmed. The footage of an actor groping the legs of a cameraman is as funny as it is super-duper weird:
There’s also some fun behind-the-scenes stuff from Squid Game, including a video on food styling and one on the smashing of prop glass.
