After a long stream of controversial social media posts made by Gina Carano the actress was fired from The Mandalorian. Carano made conspiracy theory posts about the 2020 election, transphobic jokes, and anti-mask sentiments and her departure led to the cancellation of The Mandalorian spinoff, Rangers of the New Republic.

This week, Lucy Lawless told Metro that she may have lost out on a Star Wars role because of the Carano backlash.

“To be honest with you,” Lawless told Metro. “I was already in discussions about something on — it wasn’t The Mandalorian — something Star Wars-affiliated.”

She said that she did not get the part for "political" reasons. To be clear, Lawless supports vaccinations and has long been pro-LGBTQ+.

At the heart of this conflict is that while many progressive fans fought to have Carano fired, right-wing/conspiracy nuts saw her as a hero. At the same time, a campaign by fans to have Lawless take Carano's place popped up.

“It might have hurt me in some way, because then they couldn’t hire me because it would seem to be pandering,” said Lawless, adding: “I became political.”

And though she had nothing to do with this fan-run campaign, it was enough of a sore point that she thinks it was a deciding factor.

“I haven’t thought about that since, so it hasn’t given me any pain,” she said. “But that was my thought at the time, like, ooh, this makes me look like a political appointment, and not an actress.”

None of this is confirmed; this is pure speculation on Lawless' part because actors miss roles for all sorts of reasons. That said, it could make sense: Disney has a tough line to walk between the left and right and does to try to stay out of real-world politics in a world where that is increasingly impossible.
