It's official: Johnny Depp will no longer be portraying dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald in the upcoming release Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore.
Grindelwald has been recast, with Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen taking up the villainous role.
A recently-released teaser briefly shows Mikkelsen as Grindelwald, being swallowed by an angry mob of muggles and paparazzi.
Mikkelsen is no stranger to playing unsavory characters. He starred as Dr. Hannibal Lector in the hit show Hannibal (2013-2015) and played the James Bond antagonist in Casino Royale (2006) as well.
While the teaser doesn't reveal much of Mikkelsen's take on the wizarding role, fans are hoping that the romantic relationship between Grindelwald and Dumbledore is explored more in the third film in the franchise.
Naturally, fans of the series have mixed reviews of the reveal.
Johnny Depp starred as the wicked wizard in the first two installments of the popular Harry Potter prequel franchise.
He was taken off the project back in November 2020, due to the allegations of domestic abuse toward his ex-wife Amber Heard. These allegations came to light when actress Heard filed for divorce from Depp in May 2016.
At the time, Depp had filmed a single scene for Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore.
Harry Potter fans protested Depp's involvement with the franchise, while Warner Bros. and Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling defended the actor.
At the time, Depp released a statement to Instagram proclaiming his innocence, insisting that his career and legacy be preserved.
Depp wrote, "I'd like to thank everyone who has gifted me with their support and loyalty. I have been humbled by your messages of love and concern, especially over the last few days... My resolve remains strong and I intend to prove that the allegations against me are false."
Ultimately Warner decided to sever ties with Depp, and asked him to resign.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, due to Depp's pay-or-play contract, the actor is still receiving his full pay from Warner Bros., despite the recast.
However, this is not the only controversy surrounding the film.
Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling has been under fire for posting anti-trans statements on Twitter. Rowling is credited as a screenwriter for the Fantastic Beast series.
