Cinema is probably such a successful sector of the entertainment industry in part because there’s so much to appreciate about any given film—the costumes, the scenery, the dialogue, the narrative arc if there is one, the acting, maybe a really great soundtrack, and the way the film overall resonates (if it does resonate) with popular culture or position itself in conversation with other films.
But most of us hold a special place in our hearts for movies where the cinematography is visually really beautiful. There’s something special about having a quiet, aesthetically lush experience in the theater (as Quentin Tarantino recently begged viewers to return to doing).

Here's a nickel's worth of free advice from yours truly, dear reader: if you want to be visually dazzled, watch anything directed by Stephen Shainberg. His work is filled with thoughtfully crafted spaces that are meticulously lit, dappled in jewel tones, dazzled with texture and distressed surfaces. This is probably most notable in Fur: An Imaginary Portrait of Diane Arbus., starring Nicole Kidman and Robert Downey, Jr. (Also starring Phil from Modern Family, before he was Phil.)
