Scarlett Johansson oscar

Despite filing a lawsuit against Disney in 2021, it seems that the House of Mouse is campaigning for Scarlett Johansson for Best Actress award nominations for Black Widow.

Marvel Studios

Johansson filed a suit with Marvel Studio's parent company, Disney, for releasing Black Widow on July 9th in theaters and on Disney+ via Premier Access. The star noted that she was denied box-office bonuses because of the move. The two parties did settle with a large payout and Johansson is still open to working with Disney. Disney, for its part, has begun to support ScarJo during awards season.

Black Widow is listed with other Marvel Studios 2021 releases on Disney's For Your Consideration webpage. It shares the light with Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Eternals. They're up for some of the obvious: "Best Visual Effects", but there's also Johansson in the "Best Actress" categories. Her co-stars Florence Pugh, Olga Kurylenko, Rachel Weisz, David Harbour, O-T Fagbenle, William Hurt, and Ray Winstone have also been listed for consideration as "Best Supporting Actor" and "Best Supporting Actress". Director Cate Shorthand has been listed for "Best Director" and the film itself for "Best Picture".

Marvel Studios

Marvel films made up 30% of US Box Office totals during the turbulent 2021 year but the idea of Academy Awards for Marvel films has been pretty controversial. Marvel and the trend of superhero blockbusters have pitted creatives in the industry against each other; Martin Scorsese and Ridley Scott have had negative views of the way these superhero movies have impacted the industry. Others, such as Paul Thomas Anderson and James Gunn, have defended the films.

Disney keeps on, however, and pursues awards for their superhero movies. Spider-Man: No Way Home is being pushed for Academy consideration too.

Marvel Studios

That all said, it does seem unlikely that Johansson or Black Widow will earn the Academy's recognition, though it is intriguing that Disney is fighting for Johansson. It may just be the studio moving in on a less competitive year, but we can certainly surmise that both parties are on better terms than they were a few months ago.
