Rumors have been swirling that Jos Whedon threatened Gal Gadot on the set of Justice League — rumors he is now denying.

Whedon is a successful writer and director of both TV and film known for his snappy dialogue and iconic sci-fi series like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Firefly. His largest project to date, however, was Justice League, which he inherited from Zack Snyder in order to finish photography and handle reshoots. Justice League was very poorly received; the Zack Snyder cut was released recently and is noted as a better film by many in the fandom.

Whedon has stepped back from the industry a little bit; he faced accusations from multiple colleagues of verbal abuse and emotional manipulation. It came from multiple sources, including Charisma Carpenter of Angel and Buffy, Gal Gadot, and her co-star in Justice League, Ray Fisher.

The complaints have led to investigations by WarnerMedia and to Whedon stepping down as showrunner of HBO's The Nevers. Ben Affleck recently described Justice League's set as "the worst experience" and the "nadir" of his career. Jason Momoa also noted that "serious stuff went down" during reshoots. These quotes sure do not paint a pretty picture here.

In an interview with Vulture, Whedon has denied Gadot's accusations. She had said that Whedon "threatened" her and told her that he would make her "career miserable." Whedon does acknowledge that they argued over a scene she wanted to get rid of but denied that he threatened her. He said he believes the whole thing was a misunderstanding, perhaps because — in his words — "English is not her first language". Here's what he said:

I don’t threaten people. Who does that? [...] English is not her first language, and I tend to be annoyingly flowery in my speech [...] Then I was told that I had said something about her dead body and tying her to the railroad track.

He explained that she may have misheard a joke about how if she wanted to axe the scene, she would have to tie him to a railroad track and do it over his dead body.

Gadot, in the same article, says she "understood perfectly."

An anonymous actress on Angel noted that the story sounded familiar; when her agent pushed for her to receive a raise, Whedon called her home and said she would never work for him or Fox again.

"Wow, he's still using that line," the actress was said to have remarked after she read Gadot's statement.

Eyes will now be on other Justice League actors who have spoken up about the tense set experience.
