‘In the Heights’ star Leslie Grace released the first look at Batgirl’s live-action super-suit on January 14th, and the response from the comic book fandom has been a mixed bag of those in favor of the suit's look, those who are hopeful and want to see it in action first, and others comparing it to cheap knock-off Halloween costumes or similar to those worn by CW superheroes.

The suit design, which harkens back to the 2014 redesign of Batgirl's costume in the comic books, is described by one Twitter user as being "made ... by a girl in her room who wants to be a superhero." Batgirl only has access to ready-made clothing, and much like cosplayers, adapts what she has at her disposal to fit her needs as a superhero.

Another comparison that many in the fandom have drawn is to Yvonne Craig's Batgirl from her run on ABC's Batman from 1967-68. The purple and yellow color scheme could certainly be a nod to this classic suit design.

One of the largest complaints made by fans is that the suit's flashy colors and materials have many similarities to CW superhero shows such as The Flash and Daredevil, rather than from a movie coming from the DCEU.

The trend in female superhero costume designs in recent adaptations of these classic heroes has led to a focus on functionality over an emphasis on the characters' sex appeal, which is prevalent in comic book designs of those same characters. Skimpy spandex suits may deflect bullets in the world of comic books, but bringing those characters into the real world requires an overhaul of design and expectations of the suits our heroes wear.

Other fans are very positive about the suit's design...just not which suit the costuming team chose to use as their point of reference when designing Batgirl's first superhero suit.

At the end of the day, it may be best for the Batgirl and DCEU fandom to do as Director Adil El Arbi said in his Instagram story, and "STFU and wait for the film!"
