The Batman's director Matt Reeves recently told Esquire UK about the decision to have Pattinson's Batman wear smudged eyeliner.
"You can't wear a cowl and not wear that. All of the Batmen wear that. I just loved the idea of taking off [the mask] and under that there's the sweating and the dripping and the whole theatricality of becoming this character," he said.
The first time fans got to see the smudged eye makeup was back in August of 2020 in the first trailer for The Batman was released during DC Fandome, a festival for DC Comics.
The trailer was moody and set to Nirvana's "Something in the Way." It showed Batman delivering justice all over Gotham City and The Riddler (played by Paul Dana) leaving creepy clues for the vigilante. Zoe Kravitz's Catwoman burgled a building. It also showed Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner Gordon and Colin Farrell as Penguin, known as Oz in this movie.
The trailer also introduced us to Bruce Wayne in his Batman getup, including mask, though we did get a few reveals without that face covering — and with that eye makeup and floppy hair.
The internet branded him "emo Batman" and compared him to emo-punk band My Chemical Romance.
Stephen Amell, who sported dark green eye makeup on Arrow, joked on Twitter that a smokey eye is a great place to take a DC franchise.
Reeves has said that the film will pull from Batman: Year One by Frank Miller, which focuses on Batman's beginning days as the Caped Crusader.
He described the take to The Hollywood Reporter as "a point of view-driven, noir Batman tale" that focuses on the Caped Crusader "in his detective mode" and cited films like The French Connection and Taxi Driver as inspiration. Reeves said that after Batman's parents died, he saw the child becoming a recluse.
"The truth is that he is a kind of drug addict," he said. "His drug is his addiction to this drive for revenge. He's like a Batman Kurt Cobain."
