Tim Roth’s Abomination first appeared in Marvel’s The Incredible Hulk 14 years ago. He has now confirmed that he will be returning to the MCU in Disney+’s upcoming series She-Hulk.

The Abomination, born Emil Blonsky, was the main villain in The Incredible Hulk back in 2008. Originally from Russia, Blonsky was an officer in the British Royal Marines Commandoes who received an experimental version of the super-soldier serum combined with exposure to gamma radiation. This caused him to transform into a monster similar to The Hulk, nicknamed The Abomination.

Unfortunately, The Incredible Hulk wasn’t well-received.

Ed Norton, who played the titular character, was replaced in the MCU by Mark Ruffalo. Roth’s Abomination hasn’t appeared in the MCU franchise again until now.

Interestingly, the Abomination appeared briefly in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings at the high-rise underground fighting ring run by Xialing, fighting against Benedict Wong’s Sorcerer Supreme Wong in a cage match. In a curious turn of events, the pair are seen after the fight poking fun at one another before leaving the arena together.

What could this mean for Abomination’s villain status in She-Hulk?

In an exclusive interview with DisInsider’s Dempsey Pillot, Tim Roth enthusiastically confirmed not only the Abomination’s return to the MCU with Disney+’s She-Hulk, but that viewers would be seeing his human form on-screen. This is especially important to note, because Emil Blonsky was unable to revert back from his monstrous shape after his transformation. Roth continued in the interview to say that Tatiana Maslany, who plays She-Hulk, is “a powerhouse.”

The basic premise of She-Hulk is the story of Jennifer Walters, cousin to Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner, trying to figure out how to balance her everyday life as a lawyer with having Hulk-like superpowers. While her origin story in the show has yet to be revealed, in the comics, Walters receives her superpowers through a blood transfusion from Bruce Banner.

Other notable stars joining the cast of Jessica Gao’s She-Hulk are Renée Elise Goldsberry, Ginger Gonzaga, and Jameela Jamil, who will be playing the villain Titania. Kat Coiro and Anu Valia are co-directing the show. While She-Hulk’s release date is currently unknown, it is expected to air sometime in the middle of 2022.
