Awkwafina is finally speaking up after years of being accused of putting on a “blaccent” to make a name for herself.

The Shang-Chi star posted a lengthy statement to Twitter over the weekend, her first post since December 2019. In it, she first acknowledged that the “African American community…is disproportionately affected by institutionalized policies and law enforcement policies — all the while having historically and routinely seen their culture stolen, exploited and appropriated by the *dominant* culture for monetary gain.”

She went on to question “the fine line between offense and pop culture,” noting that the rise of hip hop and social media have both contributed to African American Vernacular English (AAVE) gaining a higher profile and frequently becoming part of the common language.

“But as a non-black POC, I stand by the fact that I will always listen and work tirelessly to understand the history and context of AAVE, what is deemed appropriate or backwards towards the progress of ANY and EVERY marginalized group,” she continued, before mentioning that she formed her own identity from movies, hip-hop, and going to public school in Queens, New York.

It’s a lengthy response to a lengthy period of criticism over Awkwafina’s own use of AAVE and a “blaccent” in her comedy, although she claims in her statement that it was never intended to mock or belittle anyone.

While some were glad she finally spoke out after all this time, others didn’t feel like her comments — dropped suddenly and seemingly unprompted in the early days of Black History Month — actually did much to address the concerns and frustrations people have expressed.

A few hours later, Awkwafina returned to Twitter again to say that she is “retiring from the ingrown toenail that is Twitter.”

“Am also avail on all other social that don’t tell you to kill yourself!” she added.
